[Cover StoryDefects, ubiquitous in oxide supports, can often tune the catalytic property of supported metal catalysts. Prof. Jinlong Gong et al. demonstrate the distinct role of titanium and oxygen vacancies of TiO2 supports in the catalytic performance of supported Pt catalysts for CO oxidation. The titanium and oxygen vacancies on the TiOsupports could distinctively modify the electronic properties of Pt and thereby enhance CO adsorption strength. Additionally, because the defects would also promote the reducibility of catalysts, Pt supported on the defect-containing TiO2 exhibits higher activities for CO oxidation (see the article on pages 1323–1330).
